The film takes place approximately in 180-193. n. e. - the decline of the Roman Empire. This is the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius and later his son Commodus. The plot tells about the confrontation of Marcus Aurelius against the threat of an attack by the Germanic tribes and at the same time about a complex political struggle with opponents within the country.
Marcus Aurelius is going to make his commander Gaius Metellus Livius his heir. Meanwhile, his own son Commodus, realizing that he could lose the throne of the emperor, begins to weave intrigues against Livy.
The conflict between Commodus and Livy becomes insurmountable after his victory over the Persians. Commodus offered him to become his co-ruler in exchange for the destruction of a number of settlements with their inhabitants. Returning to Rome, the disobedient Livy was accused by the emperor and the senate of treason. He was stripped of the title of commander of the Roman army and challenged by Commodus to a duel. Livy killed the emperor, but then refused to take the throne.
